                                 ~Parish Records in Ireland~

Roman Catholic Parish Records

Starting dates for Roman Catholic Parish records vary from one part of the country to the other. They start earliest in the cities, mainly in the 1700's, and latest in rural districts in the west of Ireland, many in 1864, when a large number of new parishes (they might be termed sub-parishes) was formed. The majority of parish records start between 1800 and 1864.  Baptisms and marriages are the events recorded in Catholic parish records.  The National Library of Ireland had microfilmed most Catholic Parish registers and they are available for research in the National Library Reading Room

Baptism entries record the date of baptism, the child's names, the name of his/her father, the mother's maiden name and the names of two sponsors.   Sometimes the address of the townland in which the family lived is given.

Marriage
records given the names of the bride and groom and the names of two witnesses.  Later marriage records may give the names of the father's of the bride and groom.  The townland of the bride and groom may sometimes be given.

Church of Ireland Parish Records.

Records of the Church of Ireland are generally much earlier than the Roman Catholic church, some dating from the mid 1600's.  Church of Ireland records include baptisms, marriages and burials.  In the case of marriages, because the Church of Ireland was the established church, many marriages of other Protestant Churches are recorded in these registers.  Church of Ireland records are held either in the library of the Representative Church body or in local custody.

If your ancestors were members of any other denomination please e-mail us at morrigan@eircom.net with the details.
